Exploring New Media

Veiled women in the public sphere- redefining the concept of veil

Through my lens, the veil becomes a powerful tool for self-expression and a statement of identity, challenging the simplistic narratives that often prevail. By exploring the political dimensions of the veil in the Western context, my project invites viewers to reconsider their perceptions and engage in a more nuanced conversation about the intersection of religion, culture, and individual choice. The reason for the medium chosen is photography because the camera becomes a tool for reclaiming autonomy and self-representation. By averting their gaze from the traditional male perspective, my subjects assert their own narrative and reframe their presence in the public sphere. Through this visual dialogue, my project emphasizes the strength and resilience of these women and questions the assumptions embedded in the male gaze.

Creative Process - Photography

My creative process revolved around using photography as a means of self-expression, with myself as the central subject. This deeply introspective journey allowed me to explore the nuances of my identity, emotions, and experiences through the lens of a camera.

Each click of the shutter captured a fragment of my inner world, revealing layers of my identity and emotions that often remain hidden. Through this process, I confronted vulnerabilities, celebrated strengths, and navigated the intricate tapestry of my personal narrative.

Photographing myself enabled me to embrace authenticity and vulnerability, giving voice to the unspoken aspects of my being. The camera became a mirror to my soul, reflecting the ever-evolving story of who I am and who I aspire to be.

In this ongoing exploration, I discovered that self-photography is not just a creative outlet but a profound means of self-discovery and self-expression. It allows me to communicate my experiences and emotions with the world, bridging the gap between the inner and outer self, one image at a time.

Final Portfolio: Reclaiming my self-identity

In this project, inspired by artists like Shirin Neshat and Bani Abidi, I used my own body as a canvas for self-expression, crafting a unique identity. Through the incorporation of jewelry pieces, I established a profound connection with myself. Each jewelry item, gifted by people in my life, became a symbol of their perception of me, adding depth and meaning to my self-portraits. This project is a visual journey of self-discovery and the intricate web of identity woven through adornment.

Tell me about your Shoes.

In my imaginative project, I've explored the intriguing interplay between different types of shoes and hypothetical situations. From the effortless comfort of slides to the empowering elegance of heels and the timeless sophistication of oxfords, each shoe style became a portal to a world of possibilities.

Through my lens, I've crafted scenarios where the choice of footwear intertwines with the narrative, shaping the course of events. These hypothetical situations serve as a playful exploration of how our footwear choices can reflect our personalities, moods, and desires.

By pairing shoes with diverse scenarios, I've invited viewers to consider the subtle ways in which our choices in attire can influence our experiences and interactions. This project is a whimsical journey through the art of storytelling, where shoes become more than just fashion; they become conduits for the imagination.

Cease the misogyny

My project serves as a bold declaration of breaking free from entrenched gender roles and defying societal expectations. Through the act of stepping in front of the camera and occupying the public sphere, I've aimed to challenge the limitations that have historically constrained gender expression.

In a world that often dictates who should be the subject and who should be the observer, I've shattered these conventions. Inspired by pioneers in gender studies and visual arts, I've used the camera as a tool to amplify the voices and presence of myself who identify as a women of color.

This project is a celebration of diversity and self-expression, illustrating that gender should never confine us to prescribed roles. By making the public sphere my canvas and the camera my ally, I've sought to inspire others to break free from the constraints of gender norms and embrace the limitless possibilities of self-expression and identity.
